Clarence Denman research notes on Texasmilitary organizations 1891-1892, about 1924-1926

Dr. Clarence Phillips Denman,1897-1983, was Professor of History at Arlington State College (which wastransferred to the University of Texas System in 1965) from 1955 to 1968. Thiscollection primarily consists of Dr. Denman's handwritten and typed notes (createdapproximately between 1924 and 1926) researching the history of Texas militaryorganizations from the days of the Republic up to 1924, with the bulk of theresearch material pertaining to the period between 1840 and 1890. Some originalrecords appear in the files, although most of the information is in the form oftranscriptions from existing primary and secondary sources that Dr. Denmanconsulted, including publications and two pamphlets from the Adjutant General'sOffice, dating 1891-1892. Also included are a few original letters exchanged betweenDr. Denman and surviving members of several military organizations (as well as withlibrary representatives) concerning questions and answers pertinent to his topics ofresearch, such as the history of the creation of select Texas regiments as well asthe names of relevant officers to consult for first-hand accounts and otherinformation. Military organizations covered include regiments of the Civil Warperiod, Palestine Riflemen, Bryan Rifles, Hood's Brigade, Texas Regiment ofVolunteers, Navarro Rifles, Lone Star Rifles, Houston companies, Texas troops in theMexican War, cavalry companies, Galveston Artillery Company, Galveston Rifles(colored), Old Washington Guards, north east Texas companies, and Republic of TexasRegular Army among others.
